About Ethio Tours and Our Founder & Manager
Ethio Tours is an Ethiopian-owned tour company founded in 2011 by Melese Aychew, an experienced local guide, tour operator, and travel professional with more than two decades of experience in Ethiopia’s tourism industry.
Melese began his career as a local guide in Bahir Dar in 1998, gaining extensive knowledge of the region’s history, culture, natural attractions, and local communities. His passion for tourism and commitment to providing quality experiences led him to become actively involved in developing and promoting tourism in Bahir Dar and throughout Ethiopia.
In 2003–2007, Melese served as a founder and Chairman of the Bahir Dar Local Guide Association, where he worked to support professional local guides and improve standards within the tourism sector. From 2008–2009, he served as Main Secretary, Tour Operator, and Organizer of the Tour Guides and Boat Rental Association, helping coordinate tourism services and strengthen cooperation among local tourism professionals.
His experience and dedication were recognized internationally. In 2010, Melese was recognized by ToursByLocals as one of the best tour guides in the Amhara Region. In 2011, he established Ethio Tours, bringing together his experience, local knowledge, and strong network of tourism professionals to create memorable and authentic travel experiences for visitors to Ethiopia.
In 2013, Ethio Tours received recognition as a Best Tour Operator in East Africa by TourRadar, an achievement that reflected the company’s commitment to professional service and customer satisfaction.
Over the years, Melese has also worked as a ground agent and tour guide for several travel agencies based in Addis Ababa. He has traveled extensively throughout Ethiopia and has led both small private groups and large international groups across the country. His experience covers Ethiopia’s major historical, cultural, and natural destinations, including Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, Gondar, Lalibela, the Simien Mountains, the Danakil Depression, and the Omo Valley.
